BIG DUBB - Short Documentary
San Francisco Black Film Festival 2021
San Francisco Dance Film Festival 2021

A nostalgic ride through the memory of Big Dubb - a true West Oakland boogaloo dance pioneer. As Dubb drives around today's Oakland he reflects on the social value of dancing in a politically and socially vibrant time.
Darrin Hodges, better known as Big Dubb, was somebody in his young days. In the flourishing culture of 1960 - 70’s Bay Area, boogaloo dance was born in West Oakland and Dubb was known to be one of the very best dancers. This meant something. This dance was about more than hits and pops and entertaining a crowd. In a divided America and time of political uprising in the area, the arts was a central part of staying on track and building community. It is still to this day, as Dubb says - "a concept of freedom from the streets of Oakland, that synchronizes with the funk."
